Life on the Banks of the Ganges – photo essay

Life on the banks of the Ganges is ever dynamic. Being a first timer in Banaras I was fascinated by the lives of the people who lived by the ghats. With tourists pouring in throughout the year , the locals find them as a source of income  ! I met a couple of boys who could speak in English , French , Korean , Spanish and even in Russian, but to my disappointment none of them went to school. When asked how they learnt so many languages they said that they made friends with the tourists and learnt it from them !!! Well life is strange and even stranger for those who live by the Ganges. Below are a handful of clicks from the Ghats. Hope you enjoy them ! 🙂

Morning Prayers

Live Free !!

A Priest enters a temple at the banks of the river Ganga

Its just not the pilgrims who have a dip in the Holy Ganges !!!

The ghats are an ideal play ground for the children.

A tourists rests on a bench next to the giant water supply tank.

A dhobi dries a saree on Munshi ghat.

Carrying the Holy water !

A man waits on the ghats while his clothes dry in the sun.

Ducks on the river bank !

A boatman calls out to tourists.

Peek-a-boo !!!

Devotion- a woman offers her prayers by floating lamps in the river. Its a common sight however with loads of tourists pouring in "devotion" becomes a messy affair. The Ganga cleaning association work day and night to keep the river as clean as possible by removing the lamps , flowers and other things that are thrown into the river.

Up next : Streets and Street food of Banaras.
